Marvel Studios is finally moving forward with its long-awaited X-Men reboot, marking the first standalone mutant film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While plot details remain under wraps, Marvel has begun revealing what fans can expect as development ramps up.
Hollywood Reporter says all eyes are on D23 next week, with possible announcements.
Director
Marvel has tapped Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts) to direct the film.
Schreier has said the MCU’s take on the X-Men will be “recognizably different from what came before.”
“The core idea of what ‘X-Men’ is involves complexity. It’s an incredible opportunity with super interesting characters and much internal conflict. These characters are wrestling with their identity and place in the world—that’s inherently interesting and complex material.”
He has also confirmed Marvel is already discussing the franchise beyond a single film.
“First things first: We have to make one great movie.”
Writers
Following an earlier draft by Michael Lesslie, Marvel has brought in Beef creators Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo to write a new version of the screenplay.
Cast so far:

• Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey, confirmed with her appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
• Samara Weaving has been cast as Emma Frost.
• Kit Connor has been cast as Cyclops. Asa Germann auditioned but didn’t get it, he possibly got another role. They were also interested in Cooper Hoffman but that was nixed early over scheduling conflicts.
• Professor X had Christopher Abbott and Tom Pelphrey audition. Pelphrey is out. Abbott is unknown.
• Inde Navarette met with director Jake Schrier and wants to play Mystique, though nothing is official at this time.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has teased that the studio sees enormous long-term potential in the mutant franchise.
“The amount of X-Men stories that have not been told yet is awesome. Not just the ones that interact with other Marvel heroes, of which there are lots, but there are sagas upon sagas upon sagas within the X-Men that we’re very excited to delve into.”
