PlayStation’s decision to end production of physical PlayStation game discs by 2028 continues to spark backlash on Twitter/X, Reddit, and every other social site. With every post specifically on Twitter/X published by the company’s official account since the announcement either receiving a Community Note or having one proposed by users.

The proposed and active Community Notes have largely repeated the same criticisms across dozens of unrelated posts, with many warning consumers about Sony’s transition toward an all-digital future. Several approved Community Notes argue the company is attempting to eliminate physical media in favor of digital licenses, while others claim the shift could reduce competition in game distribution and impact consumers’ ownership rights. Other proposed notes describe Sony’s strategy as a push toward a digital-only ecosystem while pointing to concerns surrounding resale, preservation and long-term access to purchased games.

The backlash has extended far beyond posts directly related to physical media. Promotional tweets for games, PlayStation Plus announcements, hardware updates and even indie titles have all become flooded with replies about the company’s 2028 plans. Many of the posts have accumulated thousands of comments, with users repeatedly steering discussions back to physical media regardless of the topic. Several posts have also been ratioed, with replies significantly outnumbering likes as criticism continues to dominate the conversation.

PlayStation finally responded to the backlash nearly a month later, and doubled down that they will end disc production in 2028

“There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being that the digitalization of content overall has been progressing, that’s the big factor. It’s not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content, digitalization is progressing … And so when we think about the future, and we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, and we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward. 

And to this decision, we have received various opinions and people have strong views, and we understand that the community has put forth those views to us. Games are loved by many people. It’s a form of entertainment that’s loved by people, and it’s connected to people’s fond memories in many cases. And so we understand those emotions. We want to consider that. And in the future digital ecosystem, how do we engage the gamers is something that we would like to continue to explore.”
