Jon Bernthal was recently in Marrakech, Morocco, sporting a brand new look—a shaved head and greying beard. This is expected to be his look in the upcoming Nolan epic adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, which is set to be one of the director’s most ambitious projects to date.
The Odyssey marks the first time the acclaimed filmmaker is tackling an adaptation of a literary classic, and expectations are high given Nolan’s track record of reinventing familiar stories with a fresh, grounded approach.
The film, based on Homer’s 8th-century BC Greek epic poem, follows the legendary journey of Odysseus as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War. While specific casting details remain under wraps, Matt Damon is confirmed to be playing Odysseus, making this his first lead role in a Nolan film after appearing in Interstellar and Oppenheimer in supporting roles. Bernthal’s role hasn’t been officially announced, but speculation suggests he could be playing one of Odysseus’s warriors or even an iconic figure like Polyphemus.
The rest of the cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, and Samantha Morton.
The movie is now filming in locations such as Greece, Italy, Morroco, and the UK. It releases in theaters July 17, 2026. Jon Bernthal has some other high profile roles coming up, notably the Punisher special being released on Disney+. He confirmed that it will be ‘dark’ and it’s expected to be Rated-R/TV-MA. — “Frank has no interest in breaking out [of] the darkness. It’s not going to be easy. I don’t know if that’s the Netflix tone then that’s what it’s going to be … It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that.”
