Nintendo’s beloved The Legend of Zelda franchise is finally making the leap to live action.
First announced in 2023, the film is being produced by Nintendo alongside Sony Pictures and is set to bring Link, Princess Zelda and the kingdom of Hyrule to the big screen for the first time. Production has now wrapped, with the movie scheduled to arrive in theaters April 30, 2027.
Director
The film is directed by Wes Ball, best known for directing The Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Ball has previously described his vision for the project as a grounded fantasy adventure inspired by the wonder and realism of Hayao Miyazaki’s films.
Writer
The screenplay was originally written by Derek Connolly (Jurassic World, Detective Pikachu) and then T.S. Nowlin (The Maze Runner series) later replace him.

Other details
• Link will wear his classic green tunic, based off early marketing material and set leaks.
• It’s unclear which game they’re adapting, or if it’s a new story of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf saga.
• Filming was primarily in New Zealand, in a lot of the same places as where Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy was shot.
