The actor unfortunately tore his bicep and Amazon / Sony don’t want to wait.

Ryan Hurst will be recast as Kratos in Prime Video’s God of War series after suffering a serious injury while filming. According to Deadline, Hurst tore his bicep performing a stunt in late June and has since undergone surgery. The actor, who recently appeared in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, had reportedly gained 40 pounds of muscle for the physically demanding lead role before the accident.
Production on God of War was immediately paused following the injury, with four episodes reportedly completed before filming shut down. While Hurst’s recovery remains the priority, serious bicep tears requiring surgery generally take around 4–6 months before an actor can return to demanding physical work, with full strength often taking up to a year to recover.
Deadline reports Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television ultimately decided they couldn’t delay production long enough to wait for Hurst’s recovery. Instead, the role of Kratos will be recast, with the four completed episodes now expected to be reshot with a new lead actor. Prep is scheduled to begin in mid-August ahead of a mid-October production restart.
The series, from showrunner Ronald D. Moore, is filming its first two seasons back-to-back in Vancouver.
The rest of the cast remains unchanged, with Mandy Patinkin set to play Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok, and Callum Vinson starring as Atreus.
