George R.R. Martin speaks on every upcoming “Game of Thrones” spinoff

Speaking at Oxford Writers’ House, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin, recently revealed the state of future projects being developed in the Game of Thrones universe.

Following the success of spinoffs such as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, seven new spinoff projects are in the works. GRRM confirmed that three of these projects are live-action while the other four will be animated. The series’ author also announced that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will be arriving in 2027.

Live Action Spinoffs

Aegon’s Conquest

Taking place 297 years before the beginning of Game of Thrones, Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros is a foundational part of the universe. Serving as both a warning on the creation of empire and an aspirational myth for would-be rulers, the life and decisions of Aegon I directly inform the choices and circumstances of our favorite Game of Thrones characters.
The project has two competing adaptations in the works: a film by Beau Willimon and a TV series by Mattson Tomlin.

10,000 Ships

Further in the past is the history of the warrior princess, Nymeria of the Rhoynar. Her tales bring audiences a full 1000 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones. During the height of the Valyrian Empire, when armies of 250,000 people clashed with armies of 300 dragons, Nymeria collected the fragments of her people. She had one goal: find them a new home… or a new land to colonize.

Untitled Sequel Show

Where we last left our Game of Thrones characters: Jon Snow leading the Free Folk/Night’s Watch beyond the wall; Arya Stark sailing into the distant West of Westeros; Drogon flying far from King’s Landing with Daenerys’ body; Bran Stark, Samwell Tarly, and company taking over rule of the Six Kingdoms; Sansa Stark leading the independent North; and the Unsullied leaving to settle in the Summer Isles. Will the sequel show pick up from here, or will it leap into the distant future?

Nine Voyages

Corlys Velaryon and his legendary Nine Voyages saw the corners of the world of Game of Thrones and beyond. The Sea Snake and its crew travelled to where dinosaurs roam, cities are populated by shadows, and ice covers the world. With each of these voyages, Corlys gained new knowledge and acquired vast treasures. Yet treasures belong, and knowledge requires understanding. Where does Corlys fall within those lines?
Bruno Heller was originally set as showrunner for this series, which began as Nine Voyages before the name was changed to The Sea Snake. More recently, the series has been given to legendary animator Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Primal, Dexter’s Laboratory, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Powerpuff Girls) and returned to its original name Nine Voyages.

Golden Empire

The Game of Thrones equivalent to China— Yi Ti- is said to be the oldest surviving empire in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire. Although, the city of Asshai and beyond put this claim to the test. Ruled by Emperors said to be descendants of a god, Yi Ti has seen the rise and fall of many dynasties. The series could cover various points in time throughout Yi Ti’s history as an anthology. Or perhaps it could delve into the foundational story of the Great Empire of the Dawn.

Untitled Series

This series has yet to release details on its content. A series that was previously in the works, which has since been shelved, the original Long Night could be an interesting adaptation to see in animated format.
The shelved series was titled Blood Moon and would’ve taken place roughly 7,700 years before Game of Thrones.
This series was originally helmed by Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin, but was shelved due to negative reception to the pilot.

Untitled Series

Another series with scant details, this animated project could be a number of different storylines within the Game of Thrones universe. One adaptation, which has since been shelved, is the Doom of Valyria spinoff Empire of Ash. This series would’ve taken place over 400 years prior to Game of Thrones and would’ve covered the fall of the Empire of Valyria. Valyria was the realm of dragons ruled by the ancestors of the Targaryens and Velaryons.
Before its apparent cancellation, the series was set to be live-action and scripted by Max Borenstein. A High Valyrian language, created by David J. Peterson, was also being developed for the series.
