DC open to making a video game equivalent of Marvel Rivals

James Gunn confirmed DC is open to making a Marvel Rivals-style game

DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran recently had a press event where they talked about their upcoming DC slate and even delved into where they’re at with video game projects, confirming that they are in active discussions with Warner Bros gaming studios, including Rocksteady and NetherRealm, and would be open to making a Marvel Rivals competitor for DC.

Safran spoke about their hands-on role in the process:

“It’s really the first time it’s ever been this way at Warner Bros. James and I sit with the guys that run the studios under JB [Perrette, Warner’s CEO of global streaming and games]. Whether it’s NetherRealm or Rocksteady, we sit with them and talk about characters and stories that we’re interested in and that they’re interested in.”

Gunn added that he and Safran review game designs and stories early in development to ensure they align with the larger DCU plan:

“We see designs for the projects in their very earliest stages. We talk about those, we talk about what the story might be, and we’ll say, ‘Well, maybe you want to go this way because we’re planning on maybe doing something with this character.’”

Despite this forward-thinking approach, Gunn confirmed that the first official DCU video game won’t arrive for at least a couple of years. However, Safran hinted that they’re already actively involved in shaping multiple projects that are currently in early development.

They also mentioned how they’re doing collabs with Fortnite for the Superman rollout and would be open to a DC game similar to Marvel Rivals, according to reporter Brandon Davis.

Recently, it was reported that Rocksteady is working on a single-player Batman game, although that will likely be a new entry in the Arkham series, and Bloomberg’s sources said the game is years away from release.

Monolith Productions’ Wonder Woman game is also reportedly still in the works.
